At Pearson Floral Designs, sustainability isn't a trend—it's an essential part of our design philosophy. I grew up on a farm in Iowa, where I learned early on to care for the land, reuse what we had, and respect the cycles of nature. Today, that same ethic informs how I design, source, and deliver florals. Sustainability is not just a professional commitment—it’s deeply personal.

We believe beautiful florals shouldn’t come at the cost of the planet, and we’re committed to using practices and materials that are both environmentally responsible and artistically inspiring.

We consider the full life cycle of each design—from the flowers and mechanics we select to how arrangements are maintained, refreshed, reused, and responsibly retired. Our approach balances environmental responsibility with the beauty, consistency, and operational needs of each space.

How We Put Sustainability Into Practice

  • Thoughtful Floral Selections

    Every design begins with intentional selection. We consider seasonality, availability, and the intended setting, choosing varieties suited to the temperature, sunlight, airflow, handling, and expected display period. Whenever practical, we favor durable flowers and foliage and carefully plan quantities to reduce waste without compromising artistry.

  • Responsible Flower Care

    Proper conditioning, hydration, and maintenance help fresh flowers
    last longer and reduce premature replacement. We use professional FloraLife® care products to improve hydration, encourage proper opening, and extend vase life.

    For hospitality floral programs, we can refresh individual flowers or sections of an arrangement when appropriate instead of automatically replacing the entire design.

  • Lower-Impact Floral Mechanics

    We select floral mechanics according to the needs of each design, prioritizing reusable, foam-free, compostable, or reduced-waste solutions whenever practical. When floral foam is necessary for stability, hydration, or safety, we carefully limit the amount used and select more environmentally responsible options.

    Our preferred products include OASIS® TerraBrick® Floral Media, made with plant-based natural coir and a compostable binder. It is certified for home and industrial composting and can also be repurposed for potted plants or gardens. We also use OASIS® Maxlife Floral Foam, which is formulated to support flower longevity and, according to the manufacturer, degrades by 75% within one year under specified anaerobic testing conditions.

    Reusable water tubes may be appropriate for certain wedding and event installations—but only when they can be collected, cleaned, and used again. When they cannot be recovered, we consider alternative mechanics that create less single-use plastic waste.

  • Reusable Vessels and Adaptable Design Systems

    We prioritize vessels, mechanics, and structural elements that can be cleaned, reused, and reimagined. Recurring hospitality designs can be developed around a dedicated vessel collection or containers already owned by the property, helping reduce packaging and unnecessary replacement.

    For weddings and events, ceremony flowers and design structures may also be repurposed in the reception when timing, access, and the original design allow.

  • Repurposing, Donation and Thoughtful Afterlife

    We look for opportunities to extend the life of flowers beyond their original purpose. Wedding and event arrangements may be relocated, divided into smaller designs, taken home by guests, or donated to hospitals, senior communities, houses of worship, or other local organizations when their condition, timing, and recipient requirements allow.

    We also separate reusable vessels and mechanics during removal and responsibly retire botanical materials that can no longer be enjoyed. Donation is never guaranteed, but we are happy to help clients explore appropriate options in advance.

  • Long-Lasting and Living Botanicals

    Fresh flowers are not the only option for creating a memorable environment. Depending on the setting, we may recommend dried or preserved botanicals, luxury real-touch flowers, succulents, or living plants—or combine them with fresh flowers for a layered, natural result.

    These longer-lasting solutions can reduce replacement frequency and work particularly well in areas affected by heat, direct sunlight, limited maintenance access, or other conditions that shorten the life of fresh flowers. Recommendations are based on the needs and aesthetics of each space.
